My wife and I just
returned from a most wonderful adventure in the country of Panama. My wife had
been to Panama several times working for an international company and thought it
would be a great place for a vacation. (As a matter of fact, there are not too
many places she has not been for work!) Now that we are retired, we thought it
might be a good time to make like touristas and really see the country. I found
a couple on the internet, Patty and Rudy who own and operate a bed and breakfast
and condo rentals in Panama City. After becoming acquainted with them via the
Internet, we learned that Rudy operates a personal licensed and insured tour
company. We booked the B&B, discussed a few tours, and flew out of Miami. No
doubt about it, Rudy is well informed about his country and is also very
patriotic and proud. But that is not what makes him so special! He can take
you places that the big tour company can’t go, simply because he knows Panama
and its people. And he really takes care of his guests like family.
Patty and Rudy picked us
up from Tocumen Airport, Panama City and immediately we felt at home. Each
morning, Patty’s breakfasts were really well thought out and nutritious. She
gave us a “surprise” each morning with something uniquely Panamanian—tasty
Panamanian food, fresh fruit and more!!! Her coffee was really great, too.
After the first day we felt like part of the family.
We booked several tours
with Rudy: Panama City—El Valle de Anton—Bird Watching in the Gamboa rain
forrest and boat ride on Lake Gatún and the Panama Canal—The Other Panama—A
river trip to an Embera Indian Village --and a trip to the Carribean. When it
seemed our tours couldn’t get any better, they did! There is much more to see
and I really want our daughter, son and familys to go there with us next
time—And, yes we feel it’s safe for the grandchildren. Panama is so full of
surprises that we will go again. A modern cosmopolitan city just a few miles
from lush mysterious rain forests… I know that Patty and Rudy will be part of
our next visit. We are still in communication and planning our next adventure
in Central America!
We never had the
slightest bit of anticipation about our safety or the fact that our Spanish was
limited. Rudy and Patty made sure that our visit was a good one from pick up to
delivery back to the Airport. I would say that our vacation in Panama was as
near perfect as possible!
P.S. The restaurants
and Panamanian food is great and well below prices in the U.S. And guess what?
They still use the U.S.
dollar as their currency…

Rudy
is a professional tour guide, so I had also booked most of his day tours for my
second week. As I happened to be the only registrant
those days, we just had a great and very personalized experience.
I can highly
recommend the B&B and any of the tour packages.
Although we communicated mostly in English, I practiced my German and
few words of Spanish, but you could also use your Italian or French with this
delightful young couple.
I do not recommend to drive in Panama City during your first visit, or cross any
major road on foot, so do take a taxi or ask Rudy to take you to your
destinations!!!

We
found Patty's Casitas Bed & Breakfast online after reading some great
reviews. Those reviews were right. We were glad that we stayed with her.
Before our arrival, we had a lot of questions. Patty was responsive. She
checked her email very often and answered all of our questions. We stayed
4 nights at her lovely B&B. She and Rudy (her husband) picked us up from
the airport. Rudy operates a licensed tour which I will get to in a
second.
Language is not an issue. Between the two of them, they speak 5 languages
(English, Spanish, German, French and Italian). The B&B has spacious
rooms, good privacy, and full of charming architectural details. The
interior is clean and tastefully decorated. The breakfast was with healthy
local finds. For our convenience, the computer is right in our room with
internet access.
Rudy offers a personalized tour to the must-see destinations in and
outside Panama City. He is knowledgeable about the history and culture of
Panama. We heard many interesting stories and anecdotes on the tour.
Coming to a foreign city without speaking the languages, we were well
taken care of. Oh, the local restaurants that Patty and Rudy recommended
turned out to be awesome too.
We can’t think of anything negative. No question we would do it again with
Patty and Rudy.
